Detroit Business Consulting (DBC) Celebrates the Holidays!

Last weekend was full of networking, celebrating the holiday season, and giving back to the community. Our holiday celebrations began on Friday with our company Christmas party in Troy. It consisted of an ugly sweater contest, bracket-style billiards tournament, and a 50/50 raffle for charity. We were able to network with sales and marketing professionals from our Indianapolis and Grand Rapids locations since they came in for the event.

The 50/50 raffle raised $300 for a charity that helps buy Christmas presents for children that are in orphanages and would not otherwise have an presents. Mike took home the trophy from the billiards tournament; there were 47 games that were played in that tournament!

The celebrations continued on Saturday when we went to the Red Wings game against the L.A. Kings. The managers purchased tickets and we had a fun evening watching the Red Wings beat the Kings 8-2. It was an eventful and exciting weekend to wrap up the year!

Detroit Business Consulting (DBC) Celebrates Thanksgiving!

It was a short work week last week, but we still had time to get together as a company for our annual Thanksgiving dinner. Everyone brought their favorite dish to share; we had dips, homemade stuffing, different potatoes, corn bread muffins, and a variety of desserts. People brought their kids and significant others so it felt like a real Thanksgiving. We definitely set the bar high for next year because the food and turnout this year was impressive!

Detroit Business Consulting (DBC) is organizing a group of people to participate in the annual Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day! Participants can either run in the 10K, 5K or the Mashed Potato Mile. It's definitely a great idea to start off turkey day with some exercise before participating in festivities later on. The run starts at 7:30 AM, followed by the parade, and then the Lions play at 12:30 against the Packers. What a day!

If you are interested in participating in the run, talk to Aleea or Elizabeth in the office.

Detroit Business Consulting (DBC) Attends Tigers Playoff Game!

Detroit Business Consulting (DBC) attended the Tigers and Yankees playoff game 4 earlier this week! DBC’s owner, Mike Rosenberg, bought 5 tickets for the game and selected a few people to attend the game with him. The tickets were a reward for working hard and setting a great example in the office. Even though the Tigers didn’t pull off a win on Tuesday evening, it was still a fun event for everyone that was chosen to go! In the past, people from the company have attended other Tigers games, Red Wings games, and Lions games. Go Detroit!

DBC, Inc. Has Batting Practice at Comerica Park!

It's nothing new to have a fun competition going on in the office, but we do have a very new prize at stake! Starting today, we are running a sales competition until the end of the day Thursday for the chance to win an afternoon of baseball practice with the Detroit Tigers! This "Fantasy Batting Practice" is something the Detroit Tigers are offering to the public, so our company bought four tickets to participate in the event. It will take place next Saturday at Comerica Park in downtown Detroit from 1:00 PM - 4:30 PM.

With all the sports and Tigers fans in the office, this seems to be the perfect competition! The winners will be swinging, catching, fielding grounders, and hitting pitches from former Tigers players. For more information about the event, visit the Fans page of the Tigers website. Good luck to everyone!

Traits of a Good Leader

Rachael Fisher-Layne, vice president of media relations for JCPR, shared five traits of a good leader.

1. Honesty. Always do the honest thing. It makes employees feel like they know where they stand with you at all times.

2. Focus. Know where you're going and have a strong stated mission on which to lead people. If you're not sure, how can your people be sure? You have to have strong focus and stay the course.

3. Passion. Whatever it is, you must have passion for what you're doing. Live, breathe, eat and sleep your mission.

4. Respect. Not playing favorites with people and treating all people -- no matter what station in life, what class or what rank in the organizational chart -- the same.

5. Persuasiveness. People have to believe in you and your credibility. Image is everything, and the belief people have in you, your product, your mission, your facts or your reputation is key to being a great leader. You have to persuade people of this -- it doesn't just happen.

Detroit Business Consulting (DBC) Awaits Nomination Results

Detroit Business Consulting (DBC) was nominated in the spring as one of Detroit's Top Workplaces of 2011. The entire company took surveys in June that covered every aspect of the company, employee satisfaction, and management styles. The results of these surveys will determine the ranking for the company in August when the results are announced. The nomination itself is a huge honor, but we are definitely excited to see the results when they are released!

Detroit Business Consulting is Learning in Canada!

Detroit Business Consulting is traveling again! Our company attends conferences throughout the country every few months, but we rarely travel outside of the country to do some learning. Although owner Mike Rosenberg did visit London for a week earlier this year and the entire management team is heading to Puerto Rico in September, we usually only leave the U.S. for pleasure instead of work.

Mike will be in Montreal, Canada from Friday through Tuesday for conferences. He will have the opportunity to meet and consult with other top executives from both the United States and Canada. Mike is the only person from the company attending this conference, but the whole office just returned from Nashville, TN two weeks ago and will be heading to Chicago in a few months for more learning there!

Everyone is very excited for our trip to Nashville this weekend! We will be leaving early Friday morning and returning Sunday night. There has been extensive planning for this national conference, so be prepared to take lots of notes and enjoy a motivational and informative weekend!

This conference is for multiple sales and marketing companies across the nation and will have meetings for every department in the company- administration, sales & marketing, and management. Don't forget about the award ceremony and cocktail dinner on Saturday evening! There will be wonderful food and it's a great opportunity to network with other companies.

High Roller's Room!

Last night's office night was definitely one to remember! The managers rented out the High Roller's Room at the Emagine Theatre in Royal Oak. We had unlimited private bowling, shuffleboard, pool tables, and a buffet of catered food. The High Roller's Room is above the normal bowling lanes and the movie theaters. We had private TV's that were broadcasting the Heat v. Mavericks game and music played all evening.

Each week we do something different for office night. It gives us a chance to get together outside of the office to get to know each other better and have some fun!

Expanding to Philly!

It's very exciting to work in a company that is successful and growing, but it's even more exciting to work at a company that is successful enough to expand into new markets as well! We are proud to announce that we are finalizing our expansion to Philadelphia and will be ready to open in July! This is the thirteenth market Detroit Business Consulting has expanded to since opening in 2007. Our current assistant manager, Krystal will be heading up the campaign in Philly. She will focus on finishing her management training throughout the rest of June and will also be going to Nashville for more management training at the end of the month. We are excited for this new chapter of the company!

DBC Supports the Mutt March

We have another charity event in the works! Our company will be participating in the Michigan Humane Society's Mutt March next Sunday, June 5th. The march starts at 8:00 a.m. at Edsel & Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe. The Michigan Humane Society helps care for over 100,000 animals each year, so this event will help raise money and awareness for their cause.

Our company has been advertising the event for a few weeks, so some people are making donations while others are walking with their pets. For more information about the event, see Tarryn in Human Resources since she is in charge of this charity event for our company. Be sure to check out our philanthropy page to see our other charity events!

Boston Trip!

We are happy to have Mike and Ryan back from Boston. They headed there on Saturday and returned last night. While they were there, they went to a leadership conference, spent time with other sales and marketing owners to learn from them, and they were also treated to a baseball game at Fenway Park! The trip was a reward for  Ryan since he has been going above and beyond in the office. He has exceptional leadership skills that this conference helped sharpen. We are excited to see big things happen for him in the future!

Tigers Game!

We love people who work hard, and we love rewarding them for doing so! Last Thursday the Tigers played the Mariners and DBC was there to support! It was a one o’clock game and the managers reserved a suite for us to watch the game, enjoy the catered food, and socialize on a Thursday afternoon. The suite had indoor seating and private outdoor seating, as well as an endless buffet of food!

The Tigers game was only the beginning to a weekend full of activities! We had our NFL Draft Party on Thursday evening, a golf event on Saturday, a trip to the zoo, and a charity event on Sunday for Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit.

We always have different events going on with our company that give us a chance to get together outside of work. The managers promote a merit-based system, so they are constantly finding new and creative ways to reward people for doing well.

Our Creative Office Night!

Eric came up with a really creative idea for office night last week- pottery painting! We went to downtown Royal Oak last week to the Creative Arts Studio on W. Fourth Street and painted our own pieces of pottery. We each chose the piece that we wanted to decorate, these ranged from coffee mugs, to piggy banks and unique mosaics, and got to work decorating them!

Our pottery painting evening was so fun because it was something different that most of us had never done before! Typical office nights for us include going bowling, karaoke, the hat game, sand volleyball, a movie night, or doing some sort of event for a particular holiday or celebration.

We get to pick up our pieces of pottery this Thursday!

The 2011 Masters Tournament- DBC is There!

Our manager, Mike, is in Augusta, Georgia this week for the 2011 Masters Golf Tournament! He took both assistant managers and another top account representative to spend some time learning from a National Consultant in Atlanta, and then they headed to Augusta for the golf tournament.

Everyone except Mike will be returning to Michigan on Saturday, but Mike will be heading to England for a week instead. The people chosen for this trip are top performers and leaders in the office, and they have worked hard to deserve such a reward. We are looking forward to having everyone back in the office in a week!

DBC, Inc. Loves Assistant Manager Promotions!

Monday was an exciting day in the office! It’s only January, and we’ve already been able to promote an assistant manager- talk about starting off the year right! Krystal was promoted after the morning meeting on Monday in front of the entire office. She gave a motivating speech that took up through her path from the time she began as an entry level in the office, to her promotion to assistant 19 months later. Krystal will continue to develop her leadership and managerial skills so she will be prepared to manage an office of her own later this year.

Congrats Krystal!

Heading to Dallas!

The management team is traveling again- this time we are heading to Dallas, Texas for conferences and networking! We will leave Friday morning and return Sunday evening. The weekend will be full of meetings with top executives from around the country, goal setting for the new year, and information about new campaigns and companies we will be working with this year. There are also two big promotions that will be celebrated in Dallas, so those ceremonies will be held Saturday evening. We will have lots of exciting, new information to bring back to the office on Monday!
